It may seem like a good idea to buy a VGA to HDMI cable at first glance. But unfortunately, this is not the case. These cables simply don't work; they can't work. The solution that is needed to connect a computer to a high definition television is much more elaborate. A passive cable is unable to do the job so we need to look for a powered solution that can actively translate the signal.

The problem is that a VGA signal is analog, while an HDMI signal is digital. An analog to digital conversion requires an active process that evaluates each bit of information passed and translates it from its range of values to some combination of ones and zeros that can be understood by the receiving end of the HD cable.

The other problem that the conversion presents is that an HDMI cable carries both audio and video signals over the same wire. VGA only carries video signals. Even if we could use a cable to go between the two port types, our audio would get left behind at the computer station.

The real solution is probably to use what is called a VGA to HDMI converter box. The box accepts cables of both types (usually plus an audio input to accompany the video only signal from the computer) and converts the separate audio and video signals into one cohesive digital signal that can be carried by the HDMI cable. There is some loss of quality, but overall it's the best solution that really exists unless you can find different cable types to use.

After a long time spent on placing the TV and plugging in all the cords, you get a picture that's not what you saw at the store, not even close. After all, you decide to see the manual. You see a reference to a high Definition connection type called High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), and then you realize it's what you exactly need. When you go back to the store you purchased your TV at, you are only getting more confused by other devices, which use the same connection type - DVD players, Blu-Ray players, video game consoles, etc.

Older types of analog connections didn't provide such quality, which lets a single cord connection to transmit both video and audio signals. This is the new standard of best HDMI cables. If you have full HD supported by your TV, make certain you have necessary cords to make it work. It's better to find and purchase HDMI cables at cheap prices and use them instead of multiple cords behind your TV, since only by one such cord you will get both sound and image.

To help you learn what the best HDMI cables are, here are several guidelines on HDTV resolutions and what they mean.

- 480i, or 480 interlaced lines of resolution - it's also used on normal TVs for decades

- 480p, or 480 progressive lines of resolution - also known as SDTV, which progressively scans DVD player images and makes a better and smoother image on your HDTV or SDTV

- 720p, or 720 progressive lines of resolution - it's the first step into HDTV. Almost twice as much, than 480p, this resolutions supplies a much better image on an HDTV.

- 1080i, or 1080 interlaced lines of resolution - at the moment, the best resolution supplied by cable and satellite operators, which proffers excellent quality image on a TV that can display 1080i

- 1080p, or 1080 progressive lines of resolution - also referred to as full HD; at the moment, it provides the best quality image

Now, knowing the HDTV resolutions' progression, let's see what all these numbers actually mean on your new HDTV. When you choose the cords to connect your devices equipped with HDMI, always remember next things. Make sure that an HDMI cable you buy is future tested. Although, your TV programs aren't broadcasted in 1080p, the latest game consoles and DVD players broadcast it, thus you need a cord that can provide 1080p.

To make certain it provides both video and lossless audio, see if the cord is HDMI 1.3. Lots of cords longer than ten feet start to lose quality, so make certain the cord is useful for 1080p. And the last, note how tense the cord is, since most of them don't have any locking devices and may twist loose.

HDMI cables have created quite a stir in the AV world. It's a new digital format which has incredible capabilities both in the speed in which it can transmit data and the way it transmits data. Gone are the days when you need to ask your technical guru about which cables to use. With HDMI, it's one cable and you're ready to go for just about anything.

However, debate has also sprung up amongst enthusiasts and purists with regards to whether or not high end HDMI cables make a difference. The argument is simple: if HDMI is digital, what advantages would higher quality HDMI cables bring? Additionally, is there any point at all spending money on anything other than the cheapest and most basic cable?

Unfortunately there is no simple answer to this question. Firstly, not all HDMI cables may be compatible or capable for the application. HDMI has only been around a relatively short time, yet at the time of writing we've already had 3 major updates post the initial release: V1.1-1.3. The latest standard alone, V1.3, has already had 3 versions: V1.3 a, b and c. Inevitably, the latest version will cost more than the earlier versions by the very fact that it's newer and up to date. While the version differences in the latter releases may be minimal, it is worth checking if the appliance requires a particular standard. Using a version lower than that required may be detrimental to quality or functionality.

Another consideration is the quality and design of the cable itself. The HDMI signal is in fact, extremely demanding on the cable. With any cable, the longer the run, the better the cable needs to be. In other words, the longer the cable, the more interference and noise is induced into the cable. Cables are manufactured and tested only on the length they are designed. If a short run of cable were to be extended, there is no guarantee that the cable would keep its performance, or in extreme cases, if it would work at all. This means that if a poorly controlled manufacturing/testing process were to be used to produce the cable (e.g. from a low quality brand), then the quality of a cable would certainly make a difference.

The last point to consider is HDMI's built in ability for error correction. It is true that there is some capability for error correction in HDMI's design. However, this does not apply to video or audio. When used with a compatible appliance, the error correction will simply attempt to guess what the signal could have been. This means that errors will still occur if not transmitted correctly. While the probability of errors is certainly reduced with superior design of the HDMI signal, it is by no means error free. A better quality cable would therefore reduce the chance of this occurring.

In an ideal world, there would be no difference between a quality HDMI cable and an ordinary one. Unfortunately in the real world this is not the case. There are always bad products, good products and better products. The good news is that the difference between the performance of these products is becoming more and more marginal. If you are looking to buy a cable to connect your flat-screen TV, it's certainly worth getting a quality cable. However, there is also no longer any need to go overboard.

The Function of Some Oscilloscope Parts

An oscilloscope is an instrument to perform frequency analysis in an electronic device. This instrument is commonly used by a television technician. Oscilloscope can be used for many different purposes including analyzing a cell phone's frequency. We can find many technicians are using this instrument to perform analysis of mobile devices. But, you can still analyze a mobile devices frequency even if you do not have an oscilloscope.

If you just know about oscilloscope, you better know what the function of each part. Knowing the functionality of each part is important to avoid misusage of this instrument.

1. POSITION is used to adjust the signal position for channel 1.
2. INPUT is the input terminal in the measurement of CH 1. It is also used for calibration.
3. DC. BAL is used to balance DC vertical in order to use channel 1.
4. AC, GND, DC, AC is used to measure AC and DC, GND is an open terminal, DC is to measure DC voltage and other inputs.
5. Volt/DIV is a knob to select the voltage on the screen. You might find two levels of voltages from 0.01 V/div to 20 V/div.
